History of Pakistan is the history of failures

By:  Reza Hossein Borr, London, 13.5.08

"You may now thousands of ways how to fail, but you don't know even one way to succeed."  This was said by a delegate who was invited for forming a coalition of the Iranian different political groups.  The speakers in the conference blamed that particular delegate for his parties past   behaviors one after another and when he left he uttered this remarkable sentence.  "You cannot form coalitions by insulting one side constantly."  He added and he left the conference hall.

This is the history of Pakistan.  They know thousands of ways of how to fail themselves, their governments, their people and their country, but not even one single of them have known how to empower himself to succeed, enable his people to succeed and manage his government to succeed.  This is a country with a long list of failing leaders: both military and civilians, in fact all, without any exception.  It is as if it was the fate of this country to never see the good days that it was supposed to bring for the people who were forced to be Pakistanis without other choices.  Everybody who has ruled Pakistan had a bad fate.  He or she victimized that country and the people and ultimately, he or she became the victim of his own mistakes.

The two parties, PPP and PMLN, that became partners for a short while, have a long history of failing themselves, failing each other, failing the country, failing the people and giving every opportunity to the army to intervene and rule them, torture them and put them in jail or send them in exile.  These two parties are parties of good speeches and promises and bad intentions and bad behaviors.  It is intentions that form the behaviors.  The speeches are for public relations and propaganda and therefore, they are said for public consumption and what it is said in speeches and promises have never realised in action.

No one has harmed the PPP more than its own leaders and PMLN and no one has harmed PMLN more than its own leaders and the PPP.  They have agreed to destroy each other.  They have agreed to bring their destroyers, the third force, to rule them ruthlessly.  This is known in politics for a long time.  If the politicians cannot work together, then the military or another force will come in.  When the Pakistani politicians could not work together, the military came in and mismanaged it from the beginning of formation of Pakistan.  When the politicians could not work together to manage and lead Iran, the clerics moved in and ruled all of them ruthlessly and destroyed all of them.  This is the natural law of all societies.  If they cannot manage and lead themselves, someone else would do that for them and that would be done ruthlessly.  When the last dynasty of Iran before Islam declined and it is different factions could not work together, the Arabs moved in, destroyed them and ruled Iran for 650 years.

The army of Pakistan and India originate from the same sources.  Why the Indian army does not get in a position to arrange and managed a coup?  Why the army of Pakistan is waiting all the time to move in whenever the Pakistan politicians begin quarrelling with each other?  The only difference between Pakistan and India is Islam.  Is it Islam that is the source of all these troubles of Pakistan?  Is it the nature of the country that makes it impossible to manage and lead?  Is it the leaders that cannot manage and lead the country like India?  Is it the army that does not facilitate the process of civilian successful governance?  The answer depends on the person who responds to it. Whatever the answer may be one thing is clear: Pakistani politicians cannot manage and lead their country individually or collectively.

They have proved that in the past 60 years.  They have proved their incompetence in every opportunity that any of them came to power. The army has made things as much difficult as they could become to lay the ground for the failure of civilian governments to  seize power  and mismanage and mislead the country for some time until they become so much disgraced that they cannot take it anymore and pass the power disgracefully  to the civilian government and wait in the wing for its failure to take  the power again and say," We told you these civil bunch cannot manage the country and here we are  gain because the civilians could not rule the country, because the civilians are incompetent, because the civilians are corrupt, because the civilians cannot maintain law and order.

Nawaz Sharif Sharif victimised Asif Zardari when he was in power, put him in jail, accused him of corruption and murder and arranged an effective information campaign against him.  When Asif Zardari and his wife, PPP leader, Benazir Bhutto, ruled the country they victimized Nawaz Sharif and leveled against him the same that he had leveled against them.  Nawaz Sharif was very happy when her government was overthrown by the military and the PPP was happy when Nawaz Sharif's government was overthrown by the military.  Both of them enjoyed destroying each other.  Both of them enjoyed having the military in power when the other side was in power.  Both of them enjoyed being victimized and bullied by the army.  Both of them have a big share in the destruction of each other's governments.  Both of them had a big share in bringing the army in power.  When both of them became the victims of the army they spend a lot of time in jail or in exile in disgrace.  Both of them seemed to be finished for a while but the failure of the military regime to manage and lead the country successfully, brought them back into the political scene.  At this stage, a lot of people thought that they have learned from their mistakes after languishing in hail or exile for such a long time.  Practically nobody thought that the two leaders of two parties that have been so much beaten, tortured and even condemned to death could not learn the lessons of politics of working together.

The present leaders like the previous leaders of Pakistan have always brought their personal interests first and they would do that in future as we witnessed now from the differences over promises they made when they were in exile.  The amazing thing is that it is just few months that they are free but still they have not yet developed a working sense in themselves to understand that what brought them down in the past were their own behaviors and breaking their own promises.  The men of honor will want to be known in politics for their integrity and courage, who will not break their promises.  Only people of extreme genius can get away with denying the declarations they have signed with the other side and that happens only in rare cases.

This is the story of two failed men who failed their country, who failed their governments, who failed their people and gave every opportunity to the army to come to power. They are now failing themselves again.  They seem to be incapable of learning from their own histories or the history of the world.  Those who do not learn from history are doomed to become the victims of the history.

The main losers of civilian and military failed leaders of Pakistan are the people of Pakistan.  The Baluch people are the mail losers, followed by Sendhis, Pashtuns and Punjabis.  All of them have been failed by the failed state of Pakistan.  It is in this context that the future of Pakistan must be reviewed and reconsidered by intellectuals and politicians.  If the leaders of Pakistan cannot lead and manage this country as a whole, then maybe, the people separately can manage themselves quite successfully.  They have done that in the past and they can do that in future.

The leaders of Pakistan have proved in the history of Pakistan that it is not either manageable or they cannot manage it successfully.  The people who live in Pakistan must have new options.  They cannot live forever in misery and poverty while the rest of the world moves forward and gains more prosperity, stability, security and peace.  If they do not gain prosperity and peace in Pakistan, because of Pakistani leaders, then, they must find their own new ways.
